주오스트리아 문화원이 주최하고, 뮤지엄한미가 기획한 《Mega Seoul 8 Decades 서울에서 살으렵니다》 전시가 오스트리아 빈에 위치한 주오스트리아 한국문화원에서 개최된다. 이번 전시는 주오스트리아 한국문화원이 광복 80주년과 오스트리아 제2공화국 수립을 기념하여 진행하는 문화전시사업의 일환으로, 2012년 뮤지엄한미에서 처음 선보인 동명의 전시를 바탕으로 한다. 두 역사적 이정표의 의미를 담아 확장·재구성한 형태로 선보이며, 현지 관람객들에게 서울의 변화와 정체성을 새롭게 조명하는 기회를 제공한다.

본 전시에서는 전통과 현대가 공존하는 서울의 여러 단면을 국내 주요 원로, 중견, 신진 사진작가 1２명의 시선으로 살펴본다. 대한민국 수도 서울이 광복 이후 파란의 역사를 겪었던 1950년대부터 ‘서울의 찬가’를 부르며 모든 것이 서울로 집중되었던 1960년대를 거쳐, 세계적인 메가시티로 성장한 현재의 서울에 이르기까지, 서로 다른 경향들이 공존하고 충돌하는 거대 도시의 모습을 각 세대의 독특한 시각을 통해 드러낸다.

작가들은 인구 천만이 넘는 국제도시에 새겨진 현대사의 주름을, 현대화의 고통을 서로 다른 감성과 지성의 사진언어로 포착한다. 이들은 서울의 숱한 변화와 충돌에 몸을 내맡겼지만 그 공간의 모순에 날 선 시선으로 혹은 아이러니로 때로는 냉정한 초연함으로 대응하기도 한다. 서로 다른 감성과 지성의 사진언어로 무장한 그들의 작업은 광복 80주년을 맞이하는 서울을 기억하고 이해할 수 있는 생생한 흔적의 기록들이다. 관객들은 이번 전시를 통해 너무나 빨리, 너무나 많이 사라진 옛 서울에 대해 회한을, ‘서울의 찬가’의 모순을, 혹은 서울이라는 공간이 지닌 활력과 부조리를 동시에 경험할 것이다.

Hosted by the Korean Cultural Center in Austria and curated by Museum Hanmi, the exhibition Mega Seoul 8 Decades will be held at the Korean Cultural Center in Austria, located in Vienna, the heart of Austria’s cultural and artistic scene. This exhibition is part of the cultural exhibition project hosted by the Korean Cultural Center in Austria to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Korea’s Liberation and the establishment of the Second Republic of Austria. Based on the exhibition of the same name first curated by Museum Hanmi in 2012, it has been expanded to reflect the significance of these historical milestones, providing local audiences with a new perspective on Seoul’s evolution and identity.

This exhibition explores various aspects of Seoul, where tradition and modernity coexist, through the perspectives of 12 senior, mid-career, and emerging photographers. From Seoul’s turbulent history in the 1950s, following Korea’s liberation, to the 1960s, when the city became the focal point of rapid development as people sang Hymn of Seoul, and finally to the present day, where it has grown into a global megacity—this work captures the coexistence and clashes of diverse urban tendencies through the distinct perspectives of each generation.

The artists known for their unique work, capture the pains of modernization and the wrinkles of modern history etched into this international metropolis of over ten million people. Though immersed in Seoul’s countless transformations and conflicts, these artists respond to the contradictions of urban space with sharp critique, irony, or at times, detached composure. Their photographic journey is an arduous endeavor to unveil the hidden layers of Hymn of Seoul and expose the raw essence of the city. Armed with varied emotional and intellectual photographic expressions, their works serve as vivid records of the traces that allow us to remember and understand Seoul as it celebrates the 80th anniversary of Korea’s Liberation. Through this exhibition, visitors will have the opportunity to reflect on the rapid and extensive loss of old Seoul, confront the contradictions within the Hymn of Seoul, and witness both the vibrant energy and the inherent contradictions of the city itself.
