Youngsook SONG’s solo exhibition 𝙈𝙚𝙙𝙞𝙩𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙤𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙍𝙤𝙖𝙙

2026.03.07. Sat. ~ 2026.03.31. Tue.

Youngsook SONG’s solo exhibition 𝙈𝙚𝙙𝙞𝙩𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙤𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙍𝙤𝙖𝙙 will be held at Hyundai Hwarang from March 7 to March 31, 2026.

The exhibition surveys the artist’s sustained practice of documenting urban landscapes encountered along the road, scenes of nature, wildflowers and grasses blooming unnoticed, and nameless living beings. She captures the fleeting moment when flowers come into full bloom and fade, holding ephemeral instances within the image. This sensibility resonates with her own life, shaped by an ongoing awareness of the passage of time.

A particularly distinctive aspect of this body of work is her unique method of applying oil paint directly onto Polaroid film. By reviving the time of day, light, shadows, and the density of the air present at the moment of exposure, she adds color to the photographic image, extending the instant into a painterly sensibility. The process of modulation reveals the subtle truths of the world that shift according to one’s position and the passage of time. This approach emerged after the discontinuation of the SX-70 film she used in the 1980s; since then, she has introduced painterly interventions onto later-generation Polaroid film, creating new material layers within the photographic image.

The exhibition presents approximately 250 original Polaroid works with applied emulsion, alongside enlarged versions of selected pieces. It will be held concurrently at Hyundai Hwarang and the Hanmi C&C Square Gallery in Bangi-dong, where the works will be presented in a large-scale installation format.
