정승원은 서울 출생으로 런던을 기반으로 활동하고 있다. 설치, 조각 그리고 사진을 넘나들며 직물과 사진을 변형, 변주하는 작업을 해오고 있다. 작가는 시간, 그리고 과거를 공간에 관하여 어떻게 인식하는지에 대해 고민하고 인간의 기억에 대한 관심을 확장해왔다. 그는 직물이라는 가변적인 소재에 사진을 직조, 프린트하거나 작품에 물리적 변형을 가하여 다층적인 의미를 더한다. 관찰을 바탕으로 이질적인 매체 혹은 물질의 유사성을 찾아내어 빈 공간, 즉 보이지는 않지만, 물리적으로도, 개념적으로도 어딘가를 차지하고 있는 무언가를 시각적으로 구현해 낸다. 작가 개인의 기억 속 어느 순간을 가리키던 시공간에서 출발한 작업은 점차 지구와 자연의 시공간으로 확장된다. 2017년 중앙대학교 사진학과를 졸업하고 2019년 런던대학교 Slade School of Fine Art에서 MFA 학위를 취득했다. 2019년 런던 포토그래퍼스 갤러리 TPG New Talent, 2021년 MoPS Talent Portfolio 등에 선정되었으며, 그의 작업은 코벤트리 비엔날레, 허버트 미술관, 코벤트리(2023~2024); 에스에스 스페이스 스페이스, 타이페이 (2023); 주영 한국문화원, 런던(2022); 한미사진미술관, 서울(2021); 포토그래퍼스 갤러리, 런던(2019) 등에서 선보여진 바 있다. 그는 유럽과 아시아를 오가며 활발한 활동 중이다.

Seungwon JUNG (b.1992, Seoul) is an artist based in London. JUNG is interested in how our perception situates time in relation to space. Her practice traverse installation, sculpture and photography, including sculptural fabric works and photographs transformed into wide range of textiles. JUNG adds multiple layers to meaning by printing photographs on fabric, a variable medium, and applying physical transformation. She observes and captures the similarities within seemingly distinct materials and manifests ‘the intangible’ that may not be outwardly visible but clearly occupies a part of the space, both physically and conceptually. Her works originate from personal time and memory and have gradually evolved and expanded into the spatial and temporal dimensions of the Earth and nature. After receiving her BFA from Chung-Ang University, South Korea in Photography, she relocated to London where she achieved an MFA in Fine Art Media from the Slade School of Fine Art. She is the recipient of several awards including The Photographers’ Gallery New Talent Award and The Museum of Photography, Seoul Talent Portfolio. She has exhibited her work internationally across Europe and Asia. Her recent exhibitions include Coventry Biennial 2023/24, Herbert Art Gallery & Museum, Coventry; Moving Metaphors : The Genesis of a Space, ss space space, Taipei; Drifting Terrain, Korean Cultural Centre UK, London; MoPS Talent Portfolio, The Museum of Photography, Seoul; TPG New Talent, The Photographers’ Gallery.
